Burberry becomes first luxury brand to launch £90 designer face masks

PUBLISHED :

Burberry has become the first luxury fashion brand to launch a range of designer face masks, costing £90.

The high-end face masks will be made from excess fabric “enhanced with antimicrobial technology”, clad in the brands signature check.

Burberry says that it will donate 20 per cent of selling price of each face mask to its Burberry Foundation COVID-19 Community Fund, which helps health care workers and others severely impacted by the pandemic.

While the masks have been listed on its website in a range of sizes and colours, Burberry has not announced a solid launch date and simply says they’re “coming soon”.

Brands have been tentatively launching designer face masks for months as they begin to realise the opportunity reusable face masks represent.

“In the era of the coronavirus pandemic, masks are no longer commodities but have become something that hold significance,” branding consultancy Interbrand Japan’s chief executive Masahito Namiki told the Financial Times.

“By selling masks, brands can send the message that they are socially responsible and doing something good for society”.

In mid-July John Lewis launched a range of designer face masks from leading fashion brands including Mulberry, Julien Macdonald, Halpern, Liam Hodges, RÆBURN and Rixo.

Other brands including Uniqlo and Under Armour have recently launched designer, branded face masks, presenting them as fashion accessories rather than safety attire, selling units in their droves.
